Recycling

The process of returning TAO tokens back into Bittensor's emission system for future distribution.

What is Recycling?

Think of recycling like putting tokens back into a reward pool . When miners or validators register in a subnet , their TAO tokens don't disappear. Instead, these tokens return to the network's emission pool for future distribution. This process extends the time until the next halving event.

Types of Recycling

There are two main activities that recycle TAO in the network:

  • Registration fees from new miners and validators
  • Emissions from subnets with registration turned off

Root Network

The root subnet always recycles its emissions back into the system. Any subnet that turns off registration follows this same pattern. Instead of distributing tokens directly, these subnets return TAO to the network's emission pool.
